Deciding to do a Yoga Teacher Training in Asia, especially in Thailand, has some nice benefits. Thai culture is infused with Buddhism which is an offspring of the ancient Yogic philosophies. It reflects in the behavior and character of the people here who generally tend to be very friendly and polite. You’ll find lots of inspiration visiting the Thai temples and seeing people make ritual offerings all over the place. And even though most Thai’s are Buddhist, they also incorporate the Hindu deities used by the traditional Yogis of India. It’s common to see statues of Shiva, Ganesh, Saraswati, and so on. The climate here is also just right for having a vigorous and detoxifying practice.

Philosophy and spirit of yoga module

This portion of the course is going to reveal more than you ever even thought there was to Yoga! You’re understanding of why, how, and what we call Yoga will be amplified. Ram will be teaching you the most important and relevant ancient texts of India that show the bigger spiritual picture of Yoga and how to live in it. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras will be examined carefully as this masterpiece provides a clear view into the nature of Mind, self-discipline, and the path to Enlightenment. The Bhagavad Gita will be studied as a means for understanding Dhamma, or our sacred duty in the world. Sanskrit, the language of Yoga, will be explored as you hear and recite different mantras and sutras which invoke the wisdom of sages and the empowering vibrations of the Sanskrit alphabet. This bridge of spoken Sanskrit will lead you into energetic practices, really experiencing what the ancient Yogis of India have blessedly passed down to us. Pranayama, methods of controlling and moving energy, will be taught and practiced regularly, as well as group singing in the Kirtan. Pranayama can greatly increase the power of our discipline and our bodies. The Kirtan experience helps us dissolve into the heart of the human spirit, singing together as one group, no thoughts, just our voices and the music.

Anatomy and therapy of yoga module

These practical based sessions, aim at introducing the Anatomy and Physiology that relate to Yoga. Basic anatomical structures and definition of terms will be introduced, followed by practical sessions on the various joints that are most prone to injuries in Yoga. It is the aim of this session to reduce the likelihood of injuries in the vertebral column, knee joint complex, hip joint, shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle. Constraints due to individual structural variations and how these would affect asana performance will also be discussed. Anatomy session will not be completed unless you can put your knowledge into practice and application. The Applied Anatomy training is focused on how to adjust clients and / or using Yoga props, based on the understanding of joint structures and the analysis of the asanas. To perfect student’s understanding, the Anatomy & Physiology session also includes the basic physiology of the respiratory system and digestive system. Understanding these internal dynamic movements leads the practitioner to a more profound energetic practice as you learn how to develop greater lung capacity and refine your awareness of Bandha.

Marketing and business of yoga module

Are you a kind, good hearted and open minded person, but sometimes intimidated by all the competition out there? I also had all these doubts when I started out… This portion of the course will teach you how to work less, and earn more. We will teach you how to network, create useful contacts, present yourself and market yourself as a teacher or future studio owner. We will give you tips on how to create teacher bios, workshop descriptions and how to get your first yoga job, or get a better job if you are already teaching an occasional class. We will teach you about pricing and marketing, and about how to grow into teaching workshops, retreats and international events! We will give you all the info you need to present yourself to the world in the appropriate manner to follow your dreams and reach your goals. We did it, so can You!!!

    Yoga in action module

This program is about embarking on a journey of self-inquiry, with the support of a like-minded group, that leads to action within our community and outside world. “Action” can be many things, ranging from healing relationships with family and friends, to extending oneself to the larger community, or doing national or international work. The main intention is to understand the nature of our interdependence and our unique role in the web of life: to feel significant and as a part of this greater whole. This is the embodiment of Karma Yoga and also Dhamma, or self-less service and the fulfilling of your duty in this life. During this week, you will be guided through an intensive transformational process using vinyasa flow yoga and other tools to uncover your deepest passions and motivation. We will combine yoga asanas, meditation and visualization, experiential exercises, process work and ritual with the practical tools of communication, organizing, and collaborating with your peers. We will also introduce practical methods for each of you to begin to bring your own unique purpose into the world as action with the support and inspiration of your community. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of purpose and passion, armed with skills to help you be a more effective leader and agent of change in the world.

Vikasa means evolution, or spiritual development, when translated from Sanskrit. The concept of “evolution of yoga” is based on the notion that everything in the world evolves constantly, including human beings. Our primary goal as a human race and that of any living organism is evolution, and yoga can be seen as a tool to facilitate such evolution in any given individual. However, as the practice of yoga itself changes with time and place, as new techniques are being introduced, as the approach is becoming more technical, precise and scientific – any definition of it as a system or style seems to be a limitation in itself. Therefore, the “Evolution of Yoga” approach has to be seen as an ever evolving process, which anyone can be a part of, rather than a complete static system. “Evolution of Yoga” approach is based on integrating deep core work with precise alignment, combining active dynamic exercises from different disciplines with static poses from classic hatha yoga schools, alternating dynamic and static, pressure and deep relaxation, therefore exploring ha-tha or the yin and yang concept to its maximum potential, using the principle of hyper compensation. Evolution of Yoga is about challenging yourself with an ever progressing program in order to transform, optimize and balance to fine-tune your system. Core bodywork is integrated with precision breathing, through which the highest states of concentration can be experienced. As the students get more familiar with the bodywork, pranayama or breathing exercises are introduced to take the practitioner to the next level. This ultimately leads to meditation and expansion of consciousness, or – evolution!

We have asked our students to describe what Vikasa yoga style is after completing the course.

“Like the Freedom of the wind is to constantly flow, the Vikasa Practice of Yoga evolution is one to be constantly challenged, Practiced,Explored and Enjoyed!!!… Vikasa has no boundaries but endless opportunities….This is my Vikasa Concept….its Evolution Time!!! Namaste”

    -Clinton Chan, UK

“To me Vikasa yoga style is always challenging, powerful, demanding. It breaks egos and pushes you beyond your known boundaries. It makes you work and discover the level of your will power. But since it means Evolution – it can be adapted to anybody of any level!”

    -Svetlana Gordienko, Russia

“Vikasa Yoga challenges your own limitations, will power and determination. It is a strong and demanding practice, that can be tailored to any level and is a type of yoga that encourages self exploration, and ultimately into self inquiry of your own practice and growth as a yoga practitioner. What it is definitely NOT is a static, confined practice but rather encourages freedom of expression through asanas.”

    -Nabilla Sharil, Malaysia

“Vikasa Yoga means evolution, not only in Yoga practice but also in the Yogi him or herself. It is a practice that pushes to a place unimaginable but always capable, is challenging for the advanced students and adaptable to those just being introduced to the practice. Vikasa Yoga brings results quickly not only in body, but in mind and soul. It is deeply rooted in ancient philosophy but has adapted to modern times and is practical for the present day practitioner. Vikas Yoga is relevant for today, a tool to raise consciousness and reach a diverse, wide range of people and the masses. I feel blessed to be a part of the concept. Thank you Kosta – Namaste”

    -Ryan Wilaby, Usa/Bali

“Vikasa is a progressive, strength building style of hatha yoga. Vikasa yoga is adaptable to any skill level and encourages practitioners to challenge themselves, pushing outside comfort zones to achieve real transformational results in both body and mind. Vikasa is evolutionary, freestyle yoga.”

    -Denise White, Uk

“Vikasa Yoga is for me strong workout combining traditional isometric exercise with an isotonic workout. The main focus is on increasing core strength and overall body flexibility. The holding times in the postures are longer than e.g. in Ashtanga and therefore (in my opinion) the strength increase is quicker than in a vinyasa class. The breathing exercises before the asana practice completes a fantastic workout. I believe that everybody in the teacher training (and regular students that come to the Vikasa studio at least 3 times a week) could see the result. I really appreciate that the Vikasa teacher trainers are all very open minded. In other Yoga styles you find very narrow minded asana practice. However, during the teacher raining I found out that Vikasa yoga is not only about asanas. It is really a new age Yoga lifestyle regarding food and philosophy.
I can see that you live your passion and that you want to give this experience to other people.

-Kirsten Nolte, Germany (resident Vikasa Yoga teacher in Koh Samui)”

“If we try to interpret the literal meaning of Vikasa Yoga – “Evolution of Yoga” we may end up in confusion because since Yoga is everything and has always been there then how can it evolve? In my opinion the “evolution” should be understood within the concept of “learning from a living master”. What really evolves is not Yoga but what we think it is. That is when you progress far enough in becoming more aware of yourself and all the interconnected things around you through your own practice it becomes your true knowledge. To pass it on you create a recipe which will later be called “style” in such a way that other people could have similar experience of their own by constantly touching the edge of the self-awareness level available to them at the moment. That is why today most of us describe Vikasa style as strong, physically challenging, pushing beyond the boundary etc. Because this is how we can best feel the response within our own selves at the moment. Although looks like some people can actually feel it even at deeper levels. I still can’t :) . Anyway, this knowledge has now become our own because we have all seen how tremendously fast we became stronger and literally got to know our body limits and how easily these limits can be extended. But this knowledge has already slightly transformed inside each of us. That is one aspect of evolution. Another aspect of evolution is that as our self-awareness deepens the number of things we can experience also grows. That is why if we continue our practice and progress farther the “recipe” we can come up with for the followers will also be different from the initial one: simply because the “vocabulary” of available things to experience has become bigger. And so on.

This is what differentiates Vikasa from certain other schools which so much focus on following the traditions or some other “metaphysical” reasons of having asanas put in this or that exact order that it becomes a dogma; and dogma is not at all what Vikasa is :)

    -Eugene Kovalev, Singapore

Konstantin Miachin – course director, founder of Vikasa Yoga (Teaching methodology and practice, Marketing and Business)

Konstantin is an international yoga teacher and founder of Vikasa Yoga studio based in Koh Samui, Thailand. He has been passionately learning, practicing, and teaching Yoga for over six years, and his passion has lead him to search out his own personal development throughout the world. This quest has brought him into contact with many different schools and masters all over the world, in places such as Rishi-kesh, Uttar Kashi, Gangotri, Kerala, Goa, Canada, Thailand, Hong Kong and Ukraine to name a few. He has completed teacher trainings in three different disciplines, including Ashtanga Vinyasa, Yoga 23 (by master Andrei Siderski) and Sivananda. Such an overwhelming wealth of knowledge has led to a deeper understanding of yoga practice as an ever evolving process – rather than a finalized system, as a tool for evolution of a human being – rather than a goal in itself. Hence, the concept of “Evolution of Yoga” was born. The concept of “evolution of yoga” is based on the notion that everything in the world evolves constantly, including human beings. Our primary goal as a human race and that of any living organism is evolution, and yoga can be seen as a tool to facilitate such evolution in any given individual. However, as the practice of yoga itself changes with time and place, as new techniques are being introduced, the approach is becoming more technical, precise and scientific, any definition of it as a system or style seems to be a limitation in itself. Therefore, the “Evolution of Yoga” approach has to be seen as an ever-evolving process, based on classical hatha yoga techniques, which anyone can be a part of, rather than a complete static system.

    George Anthony, USA (Practice, Methodology)

George has been actualizing a life inspired by Yoga for over five years now. In the beginning, and to the present, Yoga has shown him that life is about the quality of our present experience. For the last three years he has been teaching integrated Yoga practices from many teachers and styles with a little something extra… through a penchant for profound yet simple observances, he reminds us of the vastness of the infinite possibilities, each contained within this present moment. These Zen koan like anecdotes cultivate a practice opened up to discoveries and evolution within the planes of experience. Since becoming a certified teacher he has facilitated practitioners while teaching at detox retreats, conducting workshops and scheduled classes in USA, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as teaching bilingual Yoga teacher courses. He has also worked extensively with students privately, one on one, creating practices that provide personal challenge, encouragement, and humor. Taking inspiration from nature, music, performance arts, Taoism, and Tai chi, to name a few influences, his classes are often described as organic, flowing, and demanding, yet… meditative… all while developing the experience of limitless human-being.
